When I'm laying down fancy pixels in Photoshop I prefer to view the file with a darker outer border so that I can see the artwork clearly stated on screen. Photoshop comes with a default light gray color as the background canvas. I don't dig it - but do not fear it can be changed. Customizing a new color for the canvas is pretty simple, though not very obvious.
There are several screen modes in Photoshop and the canvas color can be set independently for each mode. Go into the first full screen mode (by hitting the 'F' key). Select the color you want to use for the outer canvas - I use #232323. Select the paint bucket tool, then shift-click in the canvas area. Boo ya! Your new color is set. Hit the 'f' key again to enter the next full screen mode and repeat. Note that you can do this on the regular screen view as well, just drag the window out to be larger than your canvas and do the steps above (if you do this it will be the same color for the 1st "F" mode).
