Support The Idea

Jonathan Harris was recently quoted saying: "I believe that in the long run, ideas are the only things that survive."

And to that statement I'd like to say:
That is always something that we as designers need to keep in mind. We design to support the idea, we craft and pace and color to bring an idea to life - set it apart and make it sing with just the right tone. So, make sure the idea is there 1st. Then be meticulous about how you portray the story with your visuals, motions and music - always asking yourself if what you are doing helps the idea become known.

I like J Harris - he is a thinker and while a lot of people are boo'ing his latest talk - I think he is right on the money in a lot of ways. So much experimentation is done these days that is just for a show-off factor and it washes right over us and is forgotten. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for experimenting and testing out ideas - we'd be lost on progress if we didn't do that. But, the important point is that the outcome of the experiment should lead to a new way of incorporating something to carry an emotion, message or thought in a whole new way. Let's be the crowd that ensures we are putting a heart into the work we do, making it stand out for being an exceptional idea. Simple or complex, but always striving to make a point and leave some impact on our viewers.
