Last week I was awakened by an old track I used to love way back in high school. The tune in this case was I’m Free by the Soup Dragons. This track was often played while driving my car past the high school rather than into it for class. It’s a good anthem sing along type of song.

Music is a powerful influencer and keeper of memories for me. It takes me back to certain times in my life, it helps me be creative and always open to new discovery. Lately my routine, musically speaking, has been about what is new. New bands, new tracks, obscure stuff that hasn’t made the rounds yet, the new tunes releasing on Spotify both here and in other countries.

I didn’t realize that I’d become so tilted to the “new” that I forgot the “old.” Sure, I have Dylan and Marley in my playlists, but you know what I mean… when it came to setting up an auditory environment I would look to only add or scrape in the newest stuff. Hearing that Soup Dragon’s track woke me up to the massive past catalog of great music that I haven’t surfaced for quite some time. This has brought on a ‘coming home’ feeling of past soundtracks to my life that carry a lot of weight because they tie back to memories in a way that brand new music just can’t do [those new memories are still in progress].

Take a look in the back corner of your life catalog and resurface some old feel good tracks. You’ll be amazed at the energy it gives you. You may even call up some old buddies and try to get the band back together.
